The traditional ruler of Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Chidubem Iweka has narrowly escaped assassination at the ever busy Nkpor area near Onitsha. Suspected assassins fired bullets on his Nissan Fortuna, injuring his police orderly and damaging the car in the process.
The traditional ruler’s convoy was returning to Obosi from Asaba, Delta State after dropping him at the airport for a trip to Abuja.
An eye witness said the suspected assassins had thought that Igwe Iweka was in the car and took advantage of the traffic hold up on the road to shoot at the convoy.
The monarch has been in the forefront in the fight against crime in Obosi, a battle he started waging even before he was crowned the traditional ruler of the town, last year.
His efforts led to the arrest of some of the hoodlums, while others, including their leaders, went underground and are still terrorizing the area.
As part of measures to combat the crime, the traditional ruler had banned the sale and use of dangerous drugs in his domain.
Meanwhile, as part of measures to assist the traditional ruler in fighting crime in Obosi, a group of Obosi people living in Western Cape, South Africa, weekend donated security items, including five motorcycles, walkie talkies and other security gadgets to the royal father at his palace.
Leader of the group, Mr. Obialuneze Okolo, who is the vice chairman of Obosi Pillars Association in Western Cape, South Africa said the donation was in response to the call by the monarch for assistance.
Okolo said that because of the heightened crime in Obosi, he and his colleagues were always scared from coming home, adding that even when they come home, they were afraid of sleeping in their homes for fear of being attacked by the criminals.
He said: “Many of us are interested in investing in Nigeria, but the activities of these criminals have been scaring us.”
Also speaking during the donation, the special adviser to the traditional ruler on security matter, Mr. Ken Ikenwa said it was those who were benefitting from the crime that were allegedly fighting the Igwe.
According to him, ”When the Igwe started fighting crime in Obosi, the criminals knew that their game was up and started threatening his kife. But we will not relent. Our happiness is that all the prominent people in Obosi are behind the Igwe in this battle and we will surely win.
The image maker of the Obosi Palace, Mr. Okwudili Oguegbu who also spoke, appealed to the trouble makers to embrace peace so as to be part of the new dawn of peace in the town.
